What does your baby look like in early pregnancy?

You will wonder what the fetus looks like and whether you can listen to his or her heartbeat and feel his or her movements.

After 5-7 days of the fertilisation of the egg it will become attached to the wall of the uterus, this is called the implantation. The fertilised egg will then move towards the uterine cavity and its size will double until it becomes an embryo. After a short period the umbilical cord starts to form to transfer nutrients and oxygen to the fetus through its blood vessels. During this period the baby will be inside an amniotic sac that will protect the baby and secure his movements.

The heart starts to form on the 25th day of fertilisation but you can’t listen to the beats. After the embryo stage the spinal cord begins its formation, followed by some vertebra of the spine and the nerves.

At the end of the first month the size of the fetus will be 125 mm in length equivalent to 1.25 cm and 28 g in weight.

Be careful because it’s a sensitive period. You should stop smoking immediately and avoid smoky environments. Also stop taking medication that could affect your baby’s growth and cause birth defects.
